The presidents of all the Municipal Councils of the Algarve today expressed their solidarity «to the colleagues of Aljezur», who on Friday were sentenced to suspended prison terms and the loss of their term of office., in a case involving licensing in the urbanization of Vale da Telha.

The Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve (Amal), in a statement signed by its president, the Faro Mayor Macário Correia (PSD), affirms that it nurtures «all esteem and appreciation for the rigorous and dedicated way in which [José Amarelinho and Manuel Marreiros] have carried out their functions'.

Amal even speaks of “a climate of persecution of mayors, which has been going on for some years”.

"At issue are urban details, in which, in the name of public interest, [those mayors] practiced licensing acts," adds Amal.

"Never and ever did they have any personal and patrimonial interest in the decisions under consideration", underline the mayors of the Algarve.

Amal admits that “the independence and exemption of the Public Ministry and the Courts are an attribute of its ethics and deontology, as well as that of local authorities. We all fight for the public interest and for the transparency of our actions in the exercise of our missions». But, adds the Intermunicipal Community, "the mayors are deserving of our greatest respect and consideration."
