Reguengos de Monsaraz receives Iberian Congress on Rural Development

The Open University, with the collaboration of the Municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, will organize on June 10, from 9:30 am, an Iberian Congress on Rural Development.

This debate of ideas and exchange of experiences on rural development will take place at the Municipal Auditorium of Reguengos de Monsaraz and is part of the program of Festas de Santo António.

The congress is especially aimed at students, professors, researchers, entrepreneurs, agents and professionals in the areas of hunting and rural development and aims to promote the sustainable management of rural spaces as an element of environmental conservation and added economic value.

It is also intended to foster cooperation between hunters, farmers, agricultural entrepreneurs and public institutions, as well as to show the role they play in the conservation of biodiversity and in the sustainable development of disadvantaged rural areas.

The inauguration of the congress will be attended by José Calixto, Mayor of Reguengos de Monsaraz and Domingos Caeiro, vice-rector of the Universidade Aberta. The first thematic area will be on “Management of Hunting and Rural Space” and includes the presentation of a video on “Sustainable Management of Rural Space”, produced by Mário do Carmo (Open University) and a presentation by Paula Sarmento (President of the Institute Conservation of Nature and Biodiversity) called “Cinegetical Management and Protected Natural Spaces”.

The second thematic area will address “Rural Development” and will feature a presentation by Francisco Cordovil (National Institute of Biological Resources) who will talk about “The Post-2013 CAP: Challenges and Options for Portuguese Agriculture”.

This will be followed by a round table on rural development, moderated by Mário do Carmo, which will have as interveners Vítor Barros (researcher at the National Institute of Biological Resources and former Secretary of State for Rural Development), Francisco Lopes (former Head of the Forestry Circumscription do Sul) and Eugénio Sequeira (National Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development and the League for the Protection of Nature).

The second roundtable in this thematic area will be on “Dynamics and Development Projects – Current Situation and Perspectives” and will be moderated by Vítor Barros. Speakers on this topic will be José Calixto (President of the City Council of Reguengos de Monsaraz), Dionísio Mendes (President of the City Council of Coruche), Rio de Carvalho (Cinegetics and Environment) and António Ceia da Silva (President of the Regional Tourism Authority of the Alentejo).

In the afternoon, starting at 14:30 pm, the third thematic area of ​​the congress, entitled “Hunting and Education: the Challenges of the Future”, will take place. address “The Importance of the Educational Sector in the Pedagogy of Hunting Activity” and Nelson Neves (Alvorada) who will talk about “The Role of Youth in the Future of Hunting”.
