Students from schools in São Brás de Alportel, Salir, Alte and São Bartolomeu de Messines have already received the prizes for the Challenge at the School «Help the Iberian Lynx and the Black Vulture», an environmental education and awareness project promoted throughout the academic year 2011/2012, under the LIFE Habitat Lince Abutre project.

In addition to lectures and a fun quiz about the LIFE Habitat Lince Abutre project, around 250 students, from 2nd cycle to secondary education, from these schools, located in the Serra do Caldeirão area, participated in the challenge «Help the Iberian Lynx and the Vulture -black".

The challenge consisted of preparing a year-end work on the LIFE Habitat Lince Vulture project and its target species, within the artistic (music, theatre), literary (story, comic, dissemination materials), computer and audiovisual (blogs, videos, games) area.

At each school, all the works were evaluated by a jury consisting of a member of the project's technical team, the animator responsible for environmental education activities (from the In-Loco Association) and the president of the local Parish Council.

The first school to receive the team's visit was EB 2,3 Poeta Bernardo Passos, in São Brás de Alportel, where 8th grade students from that school and two 10th grade classes from São José Belchior Viegas School presented their work.

In the short story category, the winners were Alicia, Joana, Yara, Maia and Ricardo, from 10ºB, with the short story “Felince” – a story that told us about a Happy Lince.

In the category of creative comics, three 8D students were awarded, with beautiful illustrations about the “Real Threats” currently faced by the Iberian lynx and the black vulture.

In the promotional materials category, Paulo and Daniela from 8thD presented the sticker “Preserve the lynx and the black vulture” – a work that, due to the technical rigor of the drawings and the strong message transmitted, deserved first prize.

This was followed by São Bartolomeu de Messines, where the team went to meet the students of EB 2,3 João de Deus.

Despite the interesting and dynamic play presented by the 5thD students, the 1st place would be awarded to the 5thC colleagues, who sang and enchanted with a beautiful adaptation of Zeca Afonso's theme 'Verem bem', whose lyrics alert to the need of conservation of the Iberian lynx, the black vulture and their habitats in our country – a song that was in the ear!

This was followed by EB 1,2,3 by Salir, where the 5th grade classes presented us with very different works. The decision was not easy, given the diversity and quality of the works presented, however, the 1st prize was awarded to the 5th A, which presented an interesting identity card of species and games (crosswords and letter soups) alluding to the key concepts seized during the awareness actions previously promoted by the project in their classrooms.

In 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, were the 5th and 5th grades, with the elaboration of an illustrated tale and a lively song sung to the sound of a tambourine. These students did an excellent group work, and their enthusiasm and commitment to the topic was applauded by the entire jury.

The challenge at the school “Help the Iberian lynx and the black vulture” in Serra do Caldeirão ended at the Escola Profissional de Alte. The 1st year groups of the Food Processing and Control technical course, 1st year of Tourism, 2nd year of Information Technology and Management and 3rd year of Civil Construction participated in the competition.

These multifaceted students presented a great diversity of projects, from the creation of blogs to publicize the species and the project, to the production of a promotional video, an activity of peddy paper aimed at the population, posters publicizing the Iberian lynx and the black vulture to promote tourism, and even a real-size reproduction of an Iberian lynx, made by civil construction students.

However, the big winners were the students of the IT and Management Technician professional course, who not only developed a board game about the species – «Savage Glory» – but also developed a computer support for it.

These students were invited by the LIFE Habitat Lince Abutre project to make their game available in computer support to all visitors to the project's official page.

At the end of the school year, the LIFE Habitat Lince Abutre project congratulates all the participants in this initiative, for the effort and dedication they have shown over these months, as well as their teachers and animators, for the constant commitment and motivation of the students.

The LIFE Habitat Lince Abutre project thanks once again the presidents of the Parish Councils of São Brás de Alportel, São Bartolomeu de Messines, Salir and Alte, for having readily accepted to participate in this initiative and be part of the jury for evaluating the works. Thanks also to all schools and their teachers, for having included the project in their work plans for this school year.

See and listen here to Messines students music, adapting the music of Zeca Afonso.
