The Municipality of Monchique, fulfilling the its decision unanimously approved after President Rui André's proposal, he is in mourning (symbolic) due to the proposal to close the Monchique Court, provided for in the document under discussion on the Strategic Lines for Judicial Reform, proposed by the Ministry of Justice.
In addition, the Monchique Chamber is present at this Friday's demonstration, in front of the Ministry of Justice, in Lisbon, together with several mayors of the country, «demonstrating its reasons and grounds for the non-closure of this sovereign body in the area of the county'.
Symbolically, together with these reasons, the Mayor Rui André will deliver to the Ministry a replica of the Monchique scissor chair, which is inherited from the Romans, and whose best known use at that time was the seat of magistrates "seats”, which were the citizens who performed any of the following functions: consul, dictator, praetor, censor and aedilis. They had the right to use the curuli saddle in opposition to the plebeian magistrates who sat on a stool (subsellim).
For Rui André, «this symbolic gesture represents the express desire not to return to remote periods, namely the Roman and Medieval periods, where judgments took place in the public square, where magistrates sat in these chairs, whose art finds in Monchique the hands of artisans that make them and that are part of the heritage of this Municipality».
The mayor of Monchique emphasizes that it is necessary to guarantee the privacy and access to justice of all citizens as expressed in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, maintaining in Monchique a decent justice structure that in fact continues to serve these people who , due to the rate of aging, housing dispersion, accentuated rurality, the geography of the territory, deserve the maintenance of this organ of State sovereignty in Monchique».
