The opening of the exhibition “A Guitarra Portuguesa”, as well as the photography exhibition “Juízo Final”, at 17:30 pm, are two of the highlights of the 4th anniversary of the Portimão Museum, on May 12th. In its four years of existence, this Museum has already surpassed 250 visitors.

The exhibition on the Portuguese guitar will provide the opportunity to know the origins of the instrument, its builders, its shapes, models and trends, whose characteristic sound taken from its 12 strings was one of the main reasons why fado, considered the song Portuguese national, has been recognized as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Far beyond its particular and intense use in fado, the Portuguese guitar has a unique individuality that goes beyond the stylistic limits of national song, thanks to the work of authors such as Carlos Paredes or Pedro Caldeira Cabral.

The first references to the European zither go back to the XNUMXth century, a chordophone that will eventually give rise to the Portuguese guitar as we know it and which at the beginning of the XNUMXth century was an instrument associated with the poorer classes, coming to assert itself with the bourgeoisie at the end of that time course.

In the first half of the XNUMXth century, master builders and guitarists carried out work together that transformed the guitar as it is recognized today and which is divided into three models, according to the places where it is most commonly used: Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto.

All this and much more can be seen in this show, which runs until September 30, in which the protagonists are the Portuguese guitar and its builders, among which the names of Álvaro da Silveira and the Grácio and Cardoso families stand out. Special thanks to the collector José Paulo Costa and the Fado Museum.
