Student Ana Carolina Mendes, from the 12th year, was selected to participate in the final of the VII edition of the Biotechnology Olympics, which took place at the Catholic University, in Porto, with one of the 47 best results in the whole country.

The final exam took place on the 11th of last May, after which there was a solemn award-giving session, during which the student from this international school was awarded ninth place at the national level.

As part of the Educational Project of the school she has attended since kindergarten – Colégio Internacional de Vilamoura – the student has participated in several scientific research projects during her secondary education, promoted, for example, by the University of Oxford (“The world's climate forecasting experiment for the 21st century) and the University of Washington, linked to the discovery of protein structures, for the cure of some diseases.

These projects, which brought together several international institutions in cooperative work through the BOINC platform, led CIV students to mobilize around research in solidarity, helping the scientific community by donating computing time and developing essential skills for its global training.

The VII edition of the Biotechnology Olympics, an initiative organized by the School of Biotechnology of the Portuguese Catholic University and the Portuguese Society of Biotechnology, has as its main objective to promote knowledge and interest in biotechnology in its multiple aspects, to promote the use of the scientific method in problem solving, in addition to stimulating students' interest in activities carried out outside their school community, the exchange of ideas and teacher/student interaction in a non-teaching environment.
