The Câmara de Tavira is preparing a Municipal Plan for the Promotion of Accessibility (PMPA). The plan follows the approval of the municipality's application to the Human Potential Operational Program – Typology 8.6.5 – Actions of Research, Awareness and Promotion of Good Practices.

On the other hand, the initiative “A day in a wheelchair in the city of Tavira”, which took place on April 21st, called the attention of the population in general and the 40 participants to the difficulties of accessibility in the city.

«The Municipality of Tavira is also sensitive to this issue», guarantees the municipality.

The PMPA has as its main objective the development of integrated accessibility solutions for everyone in five main axes that condition accessibility: public roads, buildings, transport, information and communication and info-accessibility.

Both on public roads and buildings, the aim is to «allow travel and the use and enjoyment» of buildings and public roads.

In relation to transport, an analysis will be carried out in terms of accessibility, both for the mobile component and for the fixed component (stops, stops, etc.) of the transport system.

The communication axis intends to guarantee that «the information in all the above mentioned components is clearly identifiable, visible and intelligible in all areas of intervention, an objective shared also in the field of new information and communication technologies, in terms of digital information».

For this purpose, integrated accessibility diagnoses will be drawn up based on the social and physical weaknesses of the territory, and the contributions obtained by the consultation sessions, debates and public participation to be held will be decisive for the final decision on the main strategies of the plan.

Upon completion of the PMPA, the Municipality will be equipped with mechanisms that will allow the consolidation of a specialized digital platform that continues the practice of accessibility or even a geo-forum that will allow citizens to participate online in the monitoring of accessibility activities and the their civic participation.

The PMPA represents an investment of 138.334,88 euros, and an important contribution in transforming Tavira into an accessible city for all.

In articulation with the Parish Councils, the Municipality of Tavira has been carrying out some specific interventions in this domain, through the lowering of sidewalks and the reorganization of car parks for disabled citizens.
