A kayak course between Sítio das Fontes, in the parish of Estômbar, and Angrinha beach, in Ferragudo, will take place on May 12th.

This activity of interpretation of the landscape of the river Arade, using the Kayak de Mar as a tool for discovering nature, responds to Almargem's challenge for this year's Nature Festival.

Along the way, special attention is given to the importance of the estuary (Natura 2000 site) for migratory birds and for the framing of old tidal mills, in the context of the Arade river basin.

The activity will include a visit to the tide mill at Sítio das Fontes, guided by one of the Park's technicians.

Participants will be invited to familiarize themselves with the names of the pieces and mechanisms of the tidal mill, to understand the method of production of corn flour, traditionally used in the confection of cornmeal or xerém, today essential in any menu of our cuisine regional.

During the journey through the Arade estuary, participants will come into contact with the natural values of the river, with its importance for the balance of ecosystems in the economy and in the genesis of an interesting historical and cultural heritage that encompasses values as diverse as architecture and gastronomy. .

The Kayak is, perhaps, the oldest vessel, worthy of the name, conceived by man. It was created by the peoples who inhabited the frozen regions of the Arctic, such as the Inuites and Aleuts, who are also known as Eskimos, and who, originally, were dedicated to hunting and fishing.

It is an elegant, fast and silent vessel, ideal for those who like to enjoy nature with a minimum ecological footprint, for activities such as bird watching, angling, or even camping in total autonomy.

It is expected that the kayak course will contribute to the knowledge of the Arade River and its natural and historical-cultural values, as well as to the dissemination of a means of enjoying natural spaces in a sustainable and healthy way.

The activity has two aspects:

Route 1: designed for inexperienced kayakers who do not have a boat, providing the organization with the kayak, paddle and vest;

Route 2: designed for kayakers with their own boat and equipment and used to the practice of the activity.
