MOJU – Youth Movement Association in Olhão, in partnership with EAPN and the Social Network of Olhão, held from April 18th to 20th the first training in Parental Education on the “+Family +Youth” program in the region, aimed at professionals who work with parents.

The Council of Europe (re)formulated the concept of Positive Parenting, recognizing that there are a variety of positive ways of caring for our children/youth. In 2006 it went further with the Recommendation (Recommendation 2006(19)) for member states to develop, implement and support a set of measures to support Positive Parenting. Urge (re)thinking ways to support positive parenting that meet the wishes of fathers and mothers.

The Mais Família, Mais Jovem program (for parental figures of children/young people aged 10 to 16) is part of these support and education responses designated as Parental Education and was developed, in Portugal, by Maria Filomena Gaspar, from the program Parenting Wisely (PW) – Teens, by Don Gordon, organized around problematic situations that challenge parenting strategies.

Research has shown that PW is effective in reducing child/youth behavior problems, improving family functioning, reducing maternal depression, increasing parental knowledge of positive parenting skills and increasing the use of these same skills by parents, with 71% of parents reporting changes.

The training took place at the Municipal Library of Olhão and was promoted by researcher Maria Filomena Ribeiro da Fonseca Gaspar, PhD professor and lecturer at the University of Coimbra and coordinator of the Mais Família programs in Portugal.

With this initiative, it was possible to train 25 community workers (psychologists, social workers, nurses, teachers, social educators) who will seek to apply this program in their work contexts.
