In March, there were two heat waves as a result of persistent high temperatures, the Meteorology Institute announced today. The first heat wave took place between March 8th and 15th and reached the North region and the Tagus valley and Alto Alentejo, and the second was in the last week of the month, in the North and Center region and in the Sines area .

The IM explains that, in temperature, there was an anomaly in relation to normal values for this month on the continent, with the average values of the maximum temperature showing a deviation of +2,83%, which places it as the sixth highest since 1931 in March. The occurrence of maximum temperatures greater than or equal to 25ºC in many parts of the territory is noteworthy.

Despite the rain that fell in the Algarve and Baixo Alentejo in the last two days of the month, in March, in Mainland Portugal, the recorded precipitation values were on average about 1/3 of the normal values, making this month the sixth most in March. dry since 1931.

However, in the Lisbon region and in the south of the country, monthly precipitation values were close to normal values, a consequence of the high precipitation values observed at the end of the month, which contributed to alleviating the extreme drought situation in these regions.

As a result, the month of March can be characterized as very dry to extremely dry in the North and Center regions, except for the Lisbon region, which was normal, and dry to normal in the southern regions, with the exception of the Sines region where it was rainy.

Meteorological drought persists throughout the continent, with a slight decrease in the southern regions, with 57% in extreme drought, 41% in severe drought and 2% in moderate drought.

Also in the Madeira Archipelago the rainfall was much lower than normal, with the absence of rainfall in Funchal being noteworthy throughout the month, an exceptional situation that occurred in just two years since there are records (1897 and 1927).
