The Film Club of Faro canceled three of the sessions scheduled for the month of May due to financial difficulties, something that happens for the first time in the association's 56 years of history, recently completed, of the Algarve community. At issue are the lack of support from the local authority and the Cinema Institute, as well as the lack of payment of fees by members.

«The lack of support for our annual activity by the local authority and, this year, by the Instituto de Cinema, which has not even opened competitions to support the Alternative Exhibition Network of which the Portuguese film clubs are beneficiaries, dictated this painful situation that did not has been reversed by its own revenues», revealed, in a statement, the director of the Cineclube de Faro.

Showing a film costs, on average, «200 euros» and «the average number of spectators has been insufficient to cover these rental expenses» On the other hand «the partners have not responded, or have not been able to respond, to the effort to maintain their quotas in day". "The immediate future of our association is at stake," the statement reads.

The president of the Film Club of Faro Carlos Rafael Lopes confessed to Sul Informação that these cancellations may not be the only ones in the schedule for this year, if the situation does not change. "We may have to reduce our activity to sessions at headquarters," he warned.

And if the support of official entities is an important help, what would be crucial was a greater involvement of society. “It was necessary for more people to go to the sessions and for more members to appear. There will have to be a human support base», he warned.

«Thus, we appeal to all members to, if appropriate, regularize their situation as urgently as possible and contribute to the mobilization around the Cineclube de Faro, motivating others to become members or resuming their status as former members, benefiting from the Campaign that exempts the payment of the registration fee and settles all fees for 2012 for a mere 25 euros», read the note sent by the film club. to newsrooms.

“The activity of a film club is something expensive, due to the price of the films, to which add the fixed expenses, which have some strength at the end of the month, even more in a time of difficulties”, said Carlos Lopes. "The situation is even more serious, because we do not have a forecast of revenue," he added.

As for the appeal launched today by the direction he presides over, Carlos Lopes hopes that it will «serve as an alert» and that it will motivate some mobilization on the part of lovers of the seventh art in the region. The Film Club of Faro it is considered a public utility entity, so that potential patrons will have tax benefits for supporting their activity.

The Cineclube's next commercial session will be on May 22 with the film «Enter the Void», by Gaspar Noé, followed by the multi-award winning Portuguese documentary «É na Terra, não na Lua», by Gonçalo Tocha. «On the 5th of June we can see the film Além de ti, by Algarve director João Marco, and finally, on the 12th of June, the longed for Tabu, by Miguel Gomes», revealed the community.
