Olympic champion Rosa Mota was present, on Saturday, at the opening of the third edition of the Quelfes Games, and, before that, at the opening of the exhibition about the Olympic Games at the Municipal Library.

The opening ceremony of the Quelfes Games, which runs until the 21st of April, was the highlight of the competition, which was attended by former Olympic athlete Rosa Mota. The champion gave the people from Olhao the honor of lighting the pyre alongside the former Olympian from Olhano, Hélder Oliveira.

Enthusiastic about the initiative, Rosa Mota praised the initiative, since the Quelfes Games are an educational project aimed at students from the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, seeing Olympism as a transversal element to all disciplines, capable of encouraging students to physical, intellectual, social, moral and human development.

At the opening ceremony, the flame of the Quelfes Games was escorted by the BTT section of the Sportinguista Nucleus Os Leões de Olhão and by the Equestrian Art Association from its cradle, in Quelfes, to the Municipal Stadium, the 'headquarters' of the Games.

Throughout this week, athletics, basketball, Greek scarf, swimming, football or fencing activities take place in various sports spaces in the municipality of Olhão.

Alongside this grandiose sporting event, an exhibition was inaugurated precisely about Olympism and the Olympic year in which we live (London 2012), at the Municipal Library of Olhão.

The inauguration of the exhibition, which shows some documents about the Olympic Games and the medals won by Olympic athletes from Olhão – Hélder Oliveira, Jorge Costa and Ana Cabecinha – was attended by the vice-president of the Municipality of Olhão António Pina, the secretary of the Olympic Academy of Portugal Carlos Gomes and the president of the Parish Council of Quelfes Manuel Martins. Those present were invited to visit the exhibition, by Gustavo Santos.

The vice president of the Municipality of Olhão stressed that the Quelfes Games are an initiative of the Parish Council, but that they have the support and collaboration of the Municipality, either through the Municipal Library as the venue for the exhibition, or also through the use of the stadium where various initiatives take place.

Carlos Gomes, from the Olympic Academy of Portugal, praised the Olympic athletes from the city of Olhão mentioned in the exhibition, Ana Cabecinha, Hélder Oliveira and Jorge Costa, always highlighting the values associated with Olympism.
