About 130 people are enrolled in the 5th Crossing of the Via Algarviana, which starts this Saturday, the 24th, at 9:00 am, in Cabo de São Vicente.

According to Anabela Santos, from the Almargem association, which promotes the Via Algarviana, only about a dozen of these are registered to make the crossing from one end of the Algarve to the other. "Most people signed up for a day, a weekend, or three or four days," he explained.

The opening of the 5th consecutive edition of the crossing will feature a brief presentation of the project with the farol from Cabo de São Vicente, at 9:00 am this Saturday.

As in previous years, the crossing will maintain all the logistics and support of the promoter and organizer, Associação Almargem.

Daily registrations are still accepted for pedestrian or mountain biking, without informal overnight stays. Interested parties should apply through the online form available at www.viaalgarviana.org ou www.almargem.org.

The initiative is sponsored by some companies: REN, Vila Vita Parc, CGD's “Sempre por Maus Caminhos” Mountaineering Group, Cimpor, as well as, with the support of Apolónia Supermercados, some Municipalities and partner parish councils, Extremo Sul, MegaSport, GRIDE, Jaffers Supermarkets, Moinho de Cachopo, Frutas Guerreiro, Associação Orelhas Sem Fronteiras and Quinta da Brejeira.

The Via Algarviana is a long distance (300 km) pedestrian route, classified as Grande Rota (GR13). It starts in Alcoutim, next to the Guadiana, and ends at Cape S. Vicente, in Vila do Bispo, passing through the mountains of Caldeirão and Monchique. It crosses essentially forest areas and villages in the interior of the Algarve, where many of the rural traditions that the project intends to make known still persist.
