Vila Real de Santo António City Council states that it "has pleased the decision of the Port and Maritime Transport Institute (IPTM), which issued a favorable opinion on the Parceling Project for the land located to the west of the fishing port of VRSA" .

Because, «after years of deadlock», with this authorization, the municipality can finally «take another step in the implementation of the North Industrial Zone of Vila Real de Santo António, a necessary investment to expand the economic dynamics of the municipality and create a cluster dedicated to shipbuilding and ship repair».

Designed next to the Guadiana, the infrastructure will also be essential to revitalize the naval industry in Vila Real de Santo António, which has long been highlighted by the municipality in a press release, “eagers to expand to a location with appropriate areas and conditions”.

Another of its functions will be the relocation of companies that are located in the south of the city, in the area adjacent to the national forest, and which are waiting for the conclusion of a Detailed Plan that will lead to their complete requalification.

“We hope that this solution will solve the problems facing the naval industries, even more so in the current economic situation. This is, therefore, an opportunity to relocate one of the most important sectors of activity in Vila Real, which has mainly specialized in the construction of fiberglass boats, where it is the national leader», notes Luís Gomes, Mayor of Vila Real of St. Anthony.

It is also expected that other traditional industries – such as tuna canning factories – will set up in the new hub, to which other companies linked to the marketing and repair of vessels will be added.

The new industrial and business zone will have an area of about 11 hectares, where 40 pavilions and several office buildings will be distributed, which will occupy about 30 thousand meters of covered area.

The Chamber underlines that its implementation will be carried out on State land, under the management of IPTM, whereby "the terms relating to the maintenance, conservation, exploration and management of the space will be agreed upon by means of a protocol to be signed between the port body and the municipality".
