On February 27, at 21 pm, the Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen Municipal Library, in Loulé, will receive the presentation of the book “The magical realism in Portuguese literature”, by Paulo Serra.

Paulo Serra, Master in Comparative Literature and Graduated in Modern Languages and Literatures, is a professor and researcher in the area of magical realism. Author of the published thesis “O Realismo Mágico na Literatura Portuguesa”, he presents this his first book resulting from his thesis.

Magic realism is defined as a phenomenon of renewal of literary fiction. In a realistic narrative in which magical elements intervene, without trying to cause the reader's disconcertion, magical realism appears allied to a concern of several contemporary writers, such as Gabriel García Márquez, Isabel Allende, Salman Rushdie, José Saramago, Hélia Correia, to highlight the complexity of the real and official history of each nation. This concept proves to be an effective tool for comparative literature and cultural studies, as magical realism is also based on mythology and folklore.

In an unprecedented study in the case of Portuguese literature, we will look at how magical realism influenced and opened new directions for Portuguese literary fiction after the 25th of April, analyzing the specific case of the fiction of Lídia Jorge and João de Melo, authors who best explored the magical realism.

For this presentation the author will have the presence of Petar Petrov, PhD in Comparative Literature (Portuguese and Brazilian) from the University of Lisbon, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of the University of Algarve (professor of the disciplines of Modern and Contemporary Portuguese Literature , Foreign Literatures of Portuguese Language and Comparative Literature), and with the presence of the renowned writer Lídia Jorge.
