A ton of hashish from Morocco, hidden inside a vessel that had collected it at sea, was seized this Tuesday near Lagos.

Following investigations after this operation, four men, all of foreign nationality, were arrested. The detainees will be present this afternoon to the competent Judiciary Authorities.

The drug, packed in bales, was hidden in compartments placed in the structure of the speedboat.

It was a joint operation of the Southern Maritime Authority and the Judiciary Police, through the National Unit for Combating Narcotics Traffic (UNCTE), which, according to a statement from the Navy, took place in “excellent cooperation”.

This large-scale seizure comes after the Maritime Police seized on Sunday and Monday 10 bales of hash in the sea near Praia da Armona (Olhão), although there is no information on whether the two cases are connected.

The first bale was seized on Sunday, at 7:30 am, resulting from searches started at dawn, based on information that there had been an unsuccessful landing and, consequently, the release of the drug into the sea, the authorities added.

The operations began with the use of elements of the Local Command of the Maritime Police of Olhão, with the reinforcement of the Local Command of Faro, with two personal watercraft being used to cover the area, as this is an area with shallow waters.

On Monday, to ensure the systematic search of the area, the Maritime Police Forensic Diving Group also joined.
