The City Council of São Brás de Alportel will enhance another old building in the center of the town and place it at the service of culture. The work of the future Music Workshop in São Brás de Alportel was signed last week and will allow the restoration of the old Electricity Plant, in a work of 75 thousand euros financed 60 percent by the European Union, through the Proder program.

In the space that will be created, various cultural associations in the municipality that have projects not only in the area of music, but in the performing arts, in general, will be able to work, «constituting a privileged place for training and musical rehearsals».

The municipality of Sambras has been investing in the restoration of deactivated buildings, giving them new uses. Examples given by the City Council of São Brás, in the press release about the new Music Workshop, are the Explanatory and Reception Center of Calçadinha Arts and Crafts Center and the Museum of Alportel.

In the first case, an old slaughterhouse was recovered, for the Arts and Crafts Center the building of the municipality's first primary school was rehabilitated and in Alportel an old house with traditional architecture was recovered.

In the pipeline, there is still the recovery of an old press, next to the Municipal Market building, to build the Casa das Artes. This building has already been used to house an artistic residency, within the scope of the “Design e Ofícios” project, which this municipality co-organized in 2011.

These "structural interventions", carried out have the objective of "enhancing and requalifying the municipal heritage, opening doors to new activities and new dynamics in favor of the community", according to the municipality.

The building that will give rise to the Oficina da Música was originally built in the 30s of the XNUMXth century and, in addition to being the first electrical transformation station in São Brás, it served, over the years, as a Fire Brigade and a workshop for support to municipal electricity services.

Its transformation into a cultural center should take eight months, so it is expected that its inauguration will take place in 2012.
