The petition emphasizes that the subscribers – citizens and entities – “demand that the Government immediately suspend the collection of tolls on the A22/Via Infante de Sagres”.
“In the exercise of legally enshrined rights”, they also request “the Assembly of the Republic to decide to discuss this matter, proposing to the Government that it correct the orientation it has taken in this area”.
The petition, another initiative of the Commission of Users of Via do Infante, stresses that its subscribers “consider that the political decision to introduce tolls on the A22/Via Infante de Sagres was a historic error of extraordinary gravity for economic and of the Algarve'.
«The A22/Via Infante de Sagres was conceived as a structuring path for the organization of the collective life of citizens who reside and work in the Algarve, with a view to their social and economic development. That is why it was built without a motorway profile and outside the SCUT financing model, as more than two thirds were paid by community funds», adds the text of the petition.
Via do Infante, he continues, «was built as an alternative to National Road 125, because it is a highly urbanized coastal road, with obvious accidents and mortality, and cannot now be presented as a possible redevelopment or as an alternative in itself» .
«The perverse effect, already expected before the introduction of this blind public policy measure, of massive displacement of road traffic to National Road 125, causes difficulties in the mobility of populations, exponentially increasing the risks of road accidents and deaths on Algarve roads », underlines the text.
Its results will be, according to the petition, «the accelerated degradation of the quality of life of all the Algarve, the strangulation of economic and social life in the Algarve and the deterioration of the conditions of tourist attractiveness in the region, a vital sector of the Algarve's economy and a important source of income for the production of national wealth”.
For these reasons, the text argues, "the introduction of tolls on December 8, 2011 was a serious blow to the lives of individuals, families and companies that, together, contribute to the development of the Algarve's economy and society" .
The subscribers to this petition also consider that «the decision to toll traffic on the A22/Via Infante de Sagres was taken against the will of the majority of the Algarve population and that the measure is part of a policy that seems to act without any concern for interest public".
"This logic of governance, contrary to the interests of people living in their territories, tends to lead to a breakdown in the political trust of the Algarve's citizens in their elected representatives, thus contributing to a delegitimation of the democratic representation system itself", he further emphasizes the petition.
