Tricycles for adults, two-seater bicycles, chariots and even canoes were some of the means of transport that invaded downtown Faro last Saturday and served as an example, in an action to raise awareness about the use of more environmentally friendly and economical vehicles. The initiative «Algarve Central in Motion» was carried out as part of the worldwide action «Moving Planet» and mobilized around 200 people.
Participants toured the streets of Faro "in a parade of gentle mobility alternatives", which also wanted to "draw attention to the need to improve circulation and safety conditions for prams, wheelchairs and people with mobility difficulties", according to the organization of the initiative .
The action had the participation of associations, autarchies, companies and citizens of Faro, Loulé, São Brás de Alportel and Olhão. The event was organized by the Glocal associations>Faro, Almargem, APOS, Al-Portel and Civilians.
Improving the public transport system was also on the agenda. In fact, some of the participants brought fresh testimonies of the not always pleasant experience of moving between the municipalities of the Central Algarve city network by public transport.
They also brought several suggestions to improve mobility between the Algarve's municipalities, which are included in a manifesto delivered to the mayor and Faro Macário Correia, who represented AMAL - Greater Metropolitan Area of the Algarve.
Adherence to this initiative, considered the event organizers, showed that there is willingness on the part of citizens and entities to find more sustainable mobility solutions. Some, they argued, can be implemented now, as long as there is “commitment and dialogue”.
The promoters of the initiative promised soon more initiatives, namely the creation of a platform «Algarve Central in Motion» and the holding of a round table «to outline specific commitments».
