How many songs can you make from the same poem? Nine, if we are talking about the poem Azul by Carlos Norton, which serves as the basis for the «Sul Azul» project. Rádio Universitária do Algarve RUA FM challenged nine musical groups in the region to create an original melody and arrangement for the same lyrics, in an unprecedented initiative in the region.

The result of this project will be made known in two shows that will take place at Teatro Lethes, in Faro, on the 14th and 15th of October. But on October 7th, two of the original songs of the CD will be released, which will be edited and distributed free of charge from the 17th of next month, on the RUA FM broadcast.

O Sul Informação reveals the lyrics of the song (at the end of the piece) and will make the CD available for free download as soon as it is officially released.

The bands participating in the «Sul Azul» are Migna Mala, Nobre Ventura, Santa Mouraria, Camaleão Azul, Marenostrum, Vá-de-Viró, Esfinge, Deep:Her and OrBlua. Despite sharing the same geographic space, they present very different sounds and paths.

According to the author of the lyrics and the idea of the project Carlos Norton, the main objective of «Sul Azul» is to make known the music that is made in the Algarve outside its borders.

The idea that has now been put into practice is very old, “but it was in the drawer for a long time”. But the reality experienced by the Algarve and the difficulty they seem to feel in asserting themselves outside the region ended up rehabilitating it.

«Here at RUA FM, we started to have more and more the perception that no one from the outside knows what is done here. When we spoke to some experts in national music and asked them what they knew about Algarve music, the answer was almost always the same: I know there was Entre Aspas, Viviane is still active and now there is Ludo emerging», illustrated Carlos Norton .

“In a gathering organized by the RUA we discussed this matter and there were several opinions. But the fact is that the music of the Algarve is not known. So I decided to go get the idea I had in the drawer», he said.

«We could have made a compilation of themes, it would have been simpler, but we thought it was possible to make a big project. It is not the same thing to reach any radio with a record saying Música do Algarve as a CD like the one from the Sul Azul project. We decided to do something that was unique, to have more impact», said Carlos Norton.

The band selection process was not easy, as there were hundreds of musical formations considered at the outset. “We made a list with all the bands and eliminated everything that was in the extremes. But even so, we had a list of dozens of names. It was very difficult to choose only nine, because we personally know most of the musicians», he confessed.

“We tried to choose bands with different sounds and different status. Hence, we have Marenostrum, an already established band and new projects, such as Santa Mouraria», he added.

The result will only be known in full within two weeks, but Carlos Norton guaranteed that he was very impressed with what he heard. «I gave the lyrics to the bands and purposely didn't follow the creation process. I only heard the songs when they were being recorded in the studio and I really liked what I heard. They are all very original, as each band chose to use the base text in a different way», he revealed.

“This is a XNUMX% Algarve product, as the support also came from entities in the region. I think it will have two consequences: The first is the repercussion it will have outside the region. The other is internal, because I think we managed to get the bands to start working more», said, also Carlos Norton.

BLUE

Carlos Norton

I remember a day ago

far from here, far from me

dreamed of blue

Captivating color, present and dazzling

I look at the sky, the sea

I remember a gentle wind

from the comforting breeze

The lost salt and sun

On the beach passed out in this south

I look further back,

More than memory achieves

I glimpse costumes and garments

Verses and rhymes

of peoples and peoples

who came and stayed

Roots and laid stone.

Amalgamation of colors, smells and flavors

Of cultures, memories and histories

where lights and shadows incarnate

Myths and enchanted legends

Land that welcomes us

In your hills, mountains and cliffs

Always facing blue

shining and smiling

To the passengers of time.

But on earth the old man cries

From childhood moonwashed

Don't remember, don't know

these times, these customs

Always in a hurry the new arrives

everything runs, everything moves

And the land, this one, always serene

extends slowly

To the taste of the eternal blue
