Adherence of «60 and 70% at the level of educational assistants in schools» in the Algarve, which led to the closure of some establishments, and «high percentages of adhesion with regard to hospitals and health centres» are the balance of civil service strike in the region, carried out today by the Union of Trade Unions of the Algarve (USAL).

These data were given to journalists by Catarina Marques, coordinator of the USAL, who highlighted the «positive percentages» of adherence to the stoppage, despite the «issue of the minimum services that were enacted» and that «have created a lot of confusion in schools».

«There were even decision-making by some directors that do not meet what are the minimum services. The minimum services ended up affecting adherence to the strike», admitted the unionist.

However, and taking into account that in addition to professionals in the education and health sectors, there are also “some services, namely tax and court services, which have also been affected by the strike”, the spokesperson for the unions on strike says in positive adherence.

The press conference convened by USAL was attended by representatives of the unions of Portuguese nurses, teachers from the South Zone, workers in public and social functions in the south and autonomous regions and workers in the local administration.

“We are here today in solidarity with the public administration unions, which are on strike. And this strike is framed, in the first place, by the degradation of working conditions. Then with the issue of the devaluation of careers, professions and the demand for an increase in wages», summarized Catarina Marques.

«Workers, in addition to witnessing the degradation of their profession, their career, are now faced with low wages. Therefore, there is no wage appreciation, which can also, in this way, accompany this increase in the cost of living», said the unionist.

This strike is «a symptom of general discontent, which already existed, but has now increased, also due to this brutal increase in the cost of living, the price of goods and essential services, the issue of inflation, the increase in interest in respect of home loans'.

«And, therefore, the workers begin to see that, even working, they cannot meet the expenses they have. For these reasons they are fighting and do not accept inevitabilities», reinforced Catarina Marques.

In this way, he defends, the Government «should regulate the prices of essential goods and services and should also establish norms that promote access to housing for all».
