Man who fled police in Lisbon yesterday arrested this morning in Estômbar (Lagoa)

He may have come to Lagoa to visit his girlfriend

The GNR arrested, this Wednesday morning, in Estômbar (Lagoa), the Algerian who had fled from the PSP van yesterday at the door of the Court of Appeal in Lisbon.

According to Sul Informação found out, the man, who also had a residence in Alvor, had come to the Algarve to visit his girlfriend, who is a British national.

This morning, the Algerian was spotted by a witness near the Lagoa Bus Terminal, who reported it to the GNR. The man was preparing to catch a bus to Estômbar.

The GNR has just issued a statement in which it explains that the soldiers then continued on to Estômbar, where, at 9:40 am, «it was possible to see a man on the public road, whose characteristics coincided with those reported by the Public Security Police (PSP) when he fled».

During the “approach to the suspect, and given the dangerous nature of the intervention, he was searched and it was found that he was in possession of the handcuffs with which he had fled”, adds the Guard.

At the time of his arrest, the man did not have any documents with him, so it was necessary to officially confirm his identity, which was done later, with the detainee in custody at the Lagoa Territorial Post, "in close coordination with the PSP".

The Guard adds, in its statement, that it has already informed the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) and that “the detainee will be presented by the GNR to the Lisbon Court of Appeal”.

The 36-year-old man, an Algerian national, had initially been detained on Sunday in the departures area of Humberto Delgado airport in Lisbon, under a European arrest warrant.

He was wanted by the authorities in Germany, where he is accused of the crime of arson, as he is said to have set fire to the furniture of a police station, from where he also managed to escape.

Yesterday, when he was being taken to the Lisbon Court of Appeal, at around 10:20 am, the man, who was under the custody of the PSP, managed to escape.

According to the PSP, “the police officers who were transporting the detainee were surprised by him when they opened the door of the police transport vehicle, having started to flee and managed to free himself from the handcuffs on one of his wrists during his journey”.

The detainee, the PSP said, “was immediately pursued by the police officers who were at the scene, and was last seen on Rua Vítor Cordon”.

Despite the operation set up in the city of Lisbon to recapture him, the Algerian ended up being detained in the municipality of Lagoa, this morning.

According to today's Correio da Manhã newspaper, despite the fact that he had an arrest warrant from the German authorities, the citizen had a residence permit in Portugal.
