Gil Eanes suffered a heavy defeat this Saturday (39-17) at the leader Benfica's home ground, in a match of the 9th round of the women's handball I Division, occupying 5th place at the halfway point of the first phase of the competition.

The Pavilhão da Luz was the stage for a one-way encounter, in which the current national champions showed all their power, winning by 22 goals against the team from Lagos.

The Algarve team, coached by Sofia Osório, showed few arguments to counter the quality of the Lisbon team, which at half-time already had a seven-point lead (16-9).

Filipa Manuel (five goals), Soraia Lopes (three), Matilde Correia (two), Gabriela Godoy (two), Jorgeana Carvalho (two), Nathália Baliana (two) and Esmeralda Miguel (one) were the scorers for the Lagos team.

At the end of the first round, Gil Eanes remains in 5th place, with 17 points, the same as ABC, 4th with one less game.

The championship will be paused for more than a month due to the European Championship, which will feature Portugal's participation. Upon its return, the Algarve team will host AA São Pedro do Sul, in a match scheduled for December 21st, at 18:00 pm.
