In Tavira, playgrounds gain new life to become a pedagogical resource

New activities were implemented to replace the use of technologies

The D. Paio Peres Correia school, in Tavira, as well as its Parents and Guardians Association and the Rotinas Selvagens Association, decided to streamline school playgrounds so that they become a pedagogical resource.

The objective is to “promote a healthier and more balanced development, balancing the use of technology with time dedicated to exploring the outside environment”.

“Outdoor spaces play a fundamental role in the development of children and young people, and should function as a pedagogical resource equivalent to the classroom, providing a unique learning context. It is a privileged environment that, when properly equipped and with adequate support, can promote physical and emotional health, motor and social development, and be a profound galvanizer of academic success”, highlights the Rotinas Selvagens Association.

The initiative comes at a time when playgrounds have been losing their value, giving way to the entry of electronic equipment.

"No playground, children and young people should have the opportunity to play, run, jump, explore and interact with their peers, developing their communication skills, conflict resolution, tolerance to frustration, empathy and collaboration. Spending time outdoors allows children to engage in activities that stimulate motor literacy and contribute to improving their physical and mental health”, the association also highlights, adding that “children and young people who regularly participate in outdoor activities have demonstrated more balanced behaviors”.

Given the times we live in, the entities promoting this initiative, part of the Eco-schools Project, and called Recreios Com Vida, consider it “a decisive step towards the collective convergence of the various educational agents in favor of students and the promotion of their well-being and mental health”.
