Che Lagoense dominates national badminton team championship

Four titles won in Caldas da Rainha

This weekend, ACD Che Lagoense won four titles in the national championship for senior men's and women's teams, held at the Badminton High Performance Center, in the municipality of Caldas da Rainha.

The Lagoa team was crowned national champion in the men's and women's categories in the National Division I and repeated the feat in the second division.

In the main men's competition, Che Lagoense defeated Clube Stella Maris 3-0 in the final, with triumphs for Bruno Carvalho and the French Leo Van Gysel and Thomas Fourcade in the three singles matches played, avoiding the need for doubles matches.

Bruno Carvalho defeated Santiago Batalha, by 2-0 (sets of 21-16 and 21-19), Leo Van Gysel beat Gabriel Rodrigues, also by 2-0 (21-14 and 21-11), and Thomas Fourcade beat Gonçalo Silva, by a new 2-0 (double 21-8).

In the final of the women's I Division, the Lagoenses defeated Famalicense Atlético Clube, 3-1, deciding the match in the first doubles game.

Madalena Fortunato beat Sónia Gonçalves, by 2-1 (20-22, 21-10 and 21-9), and the French Romane Cloteaux-Foucalt triumphed against Adriana Gonçalves, by 2-0 (21-11 and 21-8), before Catarina Martins reduced the difference for the Minho team, beating the French Herveline Crespel, by 2-1 (17-21, 21-17 and 21-15).

In the fourth and decisive game, the pair Mariana Afonso/Herveline Crespel got the better of the pair Adriana Gonçalves/Sónia Gonçalves, by 2-0 (26-24 and 21-15).

In the finals of the II Division, Che Lagoense's B teams beat Sociedade de Instrução Musical de Porto Salvo, 3-0, in the men's competition, and Universo dos Mistérios, 3-0, in the women's competition.

Meanwhile, Alexandre Bernardo and sisters Isabela and Maria Wilkinson, Che Lagoense athletes who contributed to the collective triumphs this weekend in the second tier, are part of the list of seven players called up for the Portuguese national team for the European Junior Championship, which takes place in Ibiza, Spain, between 26 November and 5 December.
