João Fernandes from Algarve wins bronze in the national marathon championship

Algarve athlete João Fernandes, from CD Areias de São João, won the bronze medal this Sunday in the men's event at the Portuguese Marathon Championships, part of the 20th Porto Marathon.

In the men's category, the Porto Marathon was completely dominated by African athletes, who were always at the front, with Ugandan Abel Chelangat standing out in the final kilometres, who managed to triumph with a time of 2h10m02s.

Further back, the Portuguese athletes were fighting for the national title, won for the first time by Nuno Lopes, from 3 Santos Populares, who finished his seventh marathon with a time of 2h20m29s (8th in the Porto Marathon).

Carlos Costa, from Vizela Corre, was 2nd, crossing the finish line in 2h21m24s, with João Fernandes from the Algarve taking 3rd place on the Portuguese podium (10th in the Porto Marathon), in 2h22m07s.
