The production went well, “better than last year”, and all the conditions are in place for the Sweet Potato Festival, which takes place from 29 November to 1 December, at the Aljezur Multipurpose Space, to be a success again.
Ao Sul Informação, António Carvalho, councillor at Aljezur City Council responsible for events, said that the organisation expects to sell “between 10 and 20 tonnes” of sweet potatoes, the Lira variety, considered “the best in the world”.
“This year, production went better than in the past. I recently had a meeting with the Producers Association and they told me about it. Fortunately, the rains at the end of the summer helped a lot,” he explained.
Regarding the planned new developments, António Carvalho highlighted an exhibitor who “will present new things, such as bonbons and noodles with sweet potato».
The event will feature restaurants and food stalls, cooking demonstrations, local crafts exhibitors, activities for children and the traditional sweet potato dessert competition.
The musical program includes concerts by Miguel Azevedo (November 30) and Bandidos do Cante (December 1).
In total, around 120 exhibitors will participate and António Carvalho predicts that the Sweet Potato Festival will receive “between 20 and 25 thousand people” over the three days.
To facilitate access to the festival, there will be free parking available near the venue and in various areas of the village. A tourist train will be available to transport visitors from the parking spots to the Multipurpose Space.
“After the pandemic, we dropped a little, but last year the Sweet Potato Festival returned to pre-Covid numbers. This year, if not better, we want it to be at least the same as last year,” concludes António Carvalho.
