The Municipality of Tavira joined the Portuguese League Against Cancer's movement to raise awareness about prevention by lighting up the Town Hall building in pink during the month of October.
The Breast Cancer awareness campaign “Pink October” is part of a global movement that began in the United States of America in the 90s, with the aim of inspiring change and mobilizing society in this fight.
Since then, the color pink has been used to honor women with this type of cancer, raising awareness of prevention, screening and early diagnosis, which is essential to increase the chances of a cure.
In a note, the Municipality of Tavira reinforces that «breast cancer is a relevant public health problem» and that, according to the most recent statistical data (Globocan, 2024), «it is the most frequent (prevalent) in Portugal and throughout the world».
However, when diagnosed early, it has a cure rate of over 90%.
October 13th is World Metastatic Breast Cancer Day, the 15th is Breast Health Day and the 30th is National Breast Cancer Prevention Day.
