Persistent rain, strong winds and risk of flooding. This is the weather forecast for the Algarve over the next 48 hours, which has already led Civil Protection to issue a warning to the population and ask that travel be restricted to essential areas.
The region will be under an orange warning due to rain, issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which will be in effect from 3:00 am this Friday, October 11, and will last until 15:00 pm.
According to Civil Protection, “60-90 mm of precipitation could occur in 24 hours”.
Furthermore, the Algarve will be on yellow alert, also from 3:00 am to 15:00 pm, due to strong winds, with “gusts of up to 80 km/h in the highlands, with the possibility of extreme wind phenomena”, as well as thunderstorms, expected.
According to the note issued by Civil Protection, there may be “flooding in urban areas, caused by the accumulation of rainwater due to obstruction of drainage systems”.
Added to this is the possibility of “flooding, caused by the overflow of the beds of some watercourses, rivers and streams”.
«The soil morphology and hydrography of the Algarve provide for floods, floods and inundations, whenever there is very intense and prolonged rainfall», he adds.
In view of this, Civil Protection recommends the “clearing of rainwater drainage systems and the removal of inert materials and other objects that could be swept away or create obstacles to the free flow of water”, as well as the “fixing of loose structures, namely scaffolding, closets and other suspended elements».
Civil Protection also asks for “special care when moving around and staying near wooded areas, being aware of the possibility of branches and trees falling due to stronger winds”.
Motorists must adopt “defensive driving, reducing speed and taking special care with the possible formation of sheets of water on the roads, limiting journeys to the essential minimum”.
In addition, text messages are already being sent to residents in the Algarve, warning of the possibility of flooding. The forecasts also led to a briefing by Civil Protection… in Carnaxide.
