“Characterization and Improvement of Traditional Fruit Trees” – FRUIT MED”, a project developed over the last few years by the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR), will be presented on October 11th, in Tavira.
According to the CCDR, this is a «national project that represented a significant investment in the area of preservation of genetic resources and was mainly based on work to characterize traditional varieties of Algarve fruit trees, also having an improvement component for Pera Rocha, being financed by PDR 2020».
The presentation is scheduled for 9:30 am, at the Tavira Agricultural Experimentation Center (CEAT), which will host a session that seeks to «synthesize and extract the main conclusions of this work, developed in seven collections of fruit trees, which include the carob tree (44 entries), the almond tree (112 entries), the fig tree (97 entries), the medlar tree (29 entries), the apple tree/pear from Monchique (32 entries), the pomegranate tree (82 entries) and the orange tree (93 entries)», says CCDR Algarve.
The Regional Coordination and Development Commission also recalls that the Fruit Collections have “a high heritage and cultural interest, seeking to preserve traditional varieties that tend to disappear, but which are representative of the identity of the Algarve region and very important for obtaining new varieties”.
The initiative includes a visit to the Collections (led by António Marreiros and Luís Cabrita, from CCDR Algarve), of medlar, apple, pomegranate, carob, almond and fig trees, and includes a practical demonstration of fig pruning, led by Rui M. de Sousa, from the National Institute of Agricultural and Veterinary Research.
