A revamped track and a program full of entertainment are some of the new features already announced for the second edition of Monte Gordo Sand Race, which will take place on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of November.
The announcement was made yesterday, October 1st, by the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António and the Automóvel Club de Portugal, who are expecting new flooding in the Bay of Monte Gordo, after the event brought together nearly 100 people in the last edition 20 thousand people.
Once again, the event will bring to Portugal the stars of sand racing, on motorbikes and quads, under the auspices of the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) and the Portuguese Motorcycling Federation (FMP).
“This event was an absolute success last year. I congratulate the City Council for having placed its trust in our team and for the vision it had in creating this anchor event in the Algarve in November. I am certain that this year we will take a step forward and once again establish ourselves among the best in the world, also in motorcycle and quad events”, said Carlos Barbosa, president of the ACP, at the presentation of the programme.
Álvaro Araújo, Mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, added that “this event was a clear winner and a way of countering seasonality in the municipality and beyond”.
«After having fully achieved our objectives in the first edition, with a significant impact on the region's economy, this year we wanted to create an even more attractive programme for enthusiasts, families and our visitors. I believe it will be a year of consolidation in Monte Gordo Sand Race,” he added.
For this edition, the new idea was to extend the track, now measuring 6 kilometres in length, which will allow for “increasing the capacity of drivers and the safety of the track, whilst maintaining excellent visibility for the thousands of spectators expected”.
Having been part of the founding events of the FIM Sand Racing World Cup, Monte Gordo This year, the Sand Race is the penultimate of six events on a calendar that also includes France, Argentina and Italy, as well as Portugal.
