The new Algarve Central Hospital and the Oncology Centre planned for the region were included by the Government in the State Budget, under the Health heading, to which they were allocated more than 16 billion euros.
The State Budget report for 2025 also mentions the construction of five Family Health Units of model C – managed by social or private sector entities – in the Algarve region.
In the document, the Government guarantees that it “is committed to acting quickly in the procedures that will lead to the construction and equipment of several health units that will be structural in the SNS”.
“A new central hospital, an oncology center, as well as five USF-C are planned for the Algarve region,” reads the proposal.
And if the increase in the budget allocated to health, in relation to the previous State Budget, was 9%, in general terms, looking only at investment, it more than doubles from 2024 to 2025 – from 409 to 852 million euros.
However, the report does not specify the financial allocation planned for the different works that will be carried out in the Algarve.
In the case of the Algarve Oncology Center, there is a budget set aside in the Algarve 2030 Regional Program for it and a notice/invitation has already been issued to the Algarve Local Health Unit to apply for European funds for the work. However, taking into account that the European Union's contribution is 60%, the remainder will have to be guaranteed with national funds, via the State Budget.
