Mobile team will ensure surveillance on Portimão beaches outside the bathing season

Until May 31st

A mobile water rescue and pre-hospital care team will visit the beaches of the municipality of Portimão until 31 May, to ensure surveillance outside the bathing season, thanks to a protocol signed between the Portimão City Council and the Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Portimão.

With this measure, in force since Tuesday, the first, «it is possible to operationalize a unit composed of firefighters duly trained for surveillance and intervention on the coastline, which will operate using the municipal technical resources assigned to the municipal civil protection structure and in conjunction with the Maritime Authority», according to Portimão City Council.

To this end, “operational equipment for water rescue was acquired”, with an investment of around 70.000 euros, which is in addition to the rescue vessel previously acquired by the local authority and the local fire service, “with plans to purchase more material that may be deemed necessary to help fulfil this operational aspect”.

«The decision to carry out this ongoing surveillance is due to the fact that Portimão is a tourist destination par excellence, sought out by thousands of visitors even in the so-called low tourist season, which is why the team will patrol the municipality's beaches daily, from Rocha to Alvor, between 9:00 am and 18:00 pm», revealed the Council.

If you need help or support, swimmers should contact 112 (European emergency number) or, alternatively, the Protection 24 Line, on 808 282 112, which operates 24 hours a day, all year round.

«Over the last decade, Portimão City Council has invested in acquiring resources to meet the needs of residents and visitors to this important tourist destination, providing firefighters with the best means of intervention, both in terms of individual and collective equipment, as well as in the scope of differentiated training, which has resulted in a highly qualified body of peacekeepers at the service of the population, both in terms of surveillance and security, and in the high level of readiness to respond to needs, through the constant reinforcement of the integrated Municipal Civil Protection system», concluded the local authority.
