Ana Passos, former member of the Assembly of the Republic and former leader of the Socialist Women of the Algarve, wants the socialist candidate for the Chamber of Faro be chosen in an internal election open to all members of the PS council in Faro.
At issue are public statements by the current president of the PS/Faro, Tatiana Homem de Gouveia, who won the elections for the council in June, defeating and replacing Adérito Silva in office.
In the campaign for these internal elections, Tatiana Homem de Gouveia assumed that her candidate for the Chamber of Faro would be Antonio Pina, a position that he reinforced in recent public statements, where he took it for granted that this would be the PS's choice/Faro for the 2025 Local Elections, in Faro.
At the time, Ana Passos, who had been considered by Adérito Silva's list as a possible candidate for the Chamber – like other personalities –, was already criticizing the news that pointed to António Pina as a candidate for Faro, claiming that “there are no candidates indicated/predestined from above, as many have been propagating”.
Now, and after Tatiana Homem de Gouveia had confirmed the choice of António Pina, Ana Passos challenges the municipal political committee to allow “all PS members to beFaro to decide who is the candidate for the Presidency of the Municipal Council of Faro».
“It is public knowledge that there are two candidates running, myself and my comrade António Pina, mayor of the neighbouring municipality. A transparent process, a choice by members, like the one that was successfully made in 2014 between António Costa and António José Seguro, only gives strength and legitimacy to the choice. I want to be the PS candidate, but I want to be the candidate of PS members and not of a small group that makes decisions in secret”, claimed Ana Passos, in a note sent to the newsrooms.
The activist says she sent a request to the president of the PS-Faro and that he informed all members of this initiative, so that a General Assembly of Members may be called, to be held in November, and whose main point to be deliberated is the decision on the direct election of the candidate for Mayor, to take place on 20 December and whose deadline for submitting candidacies is 29 November.
«Faro is very important for the PS. We know what António Pina did in Olhão, but we don't know what he wants for Faro. And as the PS said a few years ago: “Faro é Faro“How can we choose him as a candidate without knowing his ideas and vision? He certainly has them, but we have the right and the duty to know them. My vision has been expressed as a municipal deputy and, more recently, as a candidate. It is important that members compare my vision with his and choose the best one. I want to discuss these ideas with the other candidate. If he is the chosen one, we are here to support him,” added Ana Passos.
“Everyone knows that my conviction is PS, and that I will always support the PS, but my soul is Farense. Let no one get me wrong, I am fighting for my city, for my municipality. I respect everyone, but I owe respect to myself”, she concluded.
