Air temperature values will increase gradually from today, Friday, the 13th, until the 16th, and the most significant increase will be felt on the North and Central coast, announced the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere.
According to the IPMA, this situation is due to the fact that the weather in mainland Portugal is being “influenced by an anticyclone located in the British Isles, extending as a ridge to the Azores, creating an easterly current over the Iberian Peninsula”.
Therefore, maximum temperature values above 30°C are expected across the territory in general, with some areas in the South region even reaching values above 35°C.
The minimum temperature will also rise, especially in the Tagus Valley region and Alto Alentejo, where minimum values above 20°C are expected (tropical nights).
The IPMA highlights that “the expected temperatures are clearly above the usual for the month of September, and a heat wave cannot be ruled out in some places, but not in a generalized manner across the mainland”.
The wind will blow from the east, with some sea breeze entering the west coast during the afternoon, with an intensification of the wind in the highlands expected from the end of the afternoon on Sunday the 15th.
On the southern coast of the Algarve, southeasterly waves of up to 1,5 metres are forecast, with sea water temperatures of around 18°C, which may increase slightly in the coming days.
On the west coast, significant wave heights will not exceed 1,5 metres and sea water temperatures will vary between 14 and 16°C.
Due to this situation, IPMA will issue a hot weather warning for some coastal districts.
