Prison reintegration technique attacked in Faro by inmate on parole

Inmate has not yet been captured by authorities.

A prison services reintegration technician was attacked in Faro, on Wednesday, by a prisoner on parole who, after trying to attack other employees, fled, a union source told Lusa.

The man, “very violent and aggressive”, entered the regional delegation for social reintegration of Faro breaking down the entrance door with a crowbar, he attacked the social reintegration technician in the leg and tried to attack the coordinator in the head, but missed, described the president of the Union of Technicians of the General Directorate of Reintegration and Prison Services (STDGRSP) Miguel Gonçalves.

The technician was hospitalized, the PSP took charge of the incident and, according to the union, the inmate has not yet been captured by the authorities.

The workers' representative reiterated that these services “urgently” need security and recalled that last month there was a similar attack in Évora.

“We are poorly paid technicians and now we are subject to being beaten up,” Miguel Gonçalves joked.

The union once again “lamented the inertia” of the DGRSP and accused the organization of “completely ignoring the reality of the services, taking late decisions” and limiting itself to “reacting without any proactivity”.

According to the workers' rights organization, the attacker was on parole serving the end of a sentence, which was not the only one, for the crime of domestic violence.

The inmate wanted to be treated at that moment because “he wanted to have a home”, according to the report given to Lusa.

The PSP confirmed to Lusa that it was aware of the incident and sent officers to the scene who “identified the suspect and prepared the respective file”, which was sent to the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The Directorate-General for Reintegration and Prison Services is the body responsible for crime prevention, execution of sentences, social reintegration and management of the educational and prison guardianship systems.
