PSD of São Brás presents proposal for exemption from IMI for firefighters

The proposal was presented on August 27th and will be discussed and voted on at today's Chamber meeting.

The elected councillors of the PSD of São Brás de Alportel, Bruno Sousa Costa and Sílvia Revés, presented at the last council meeting a proposal that aims to exempt the Firefighters of São Brás de Alportel from the Municipal Property Tax (IMI).

The proposal was presented on August 27th and will, according to the councilors, be discussed and voted on at the Council meeting scheduled for today, September 10th.

The measure provides that firefighters who own homes and are part of the Active or Command Staff, on a voluntary basis and residing in the municipality, benefit from a total exemption from IMI.

The objective is, according to the authors of the proposal, “to alleviate the financial burden of these professionals and ensure greater economic stability, encouraging their continuity and dedication to the Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of São Brás de Alportel”.

The IMI exemption will apply exclusively to firefighters who are active in the staff or in command, and the municipality will not assume any debts prior to the entry into force of the measure. If the proposal is approved, its implementation is scheduled for 2025, with its inclusion in next year's Municipal Budget.

In a statement, the PSD of São Brás de Alportel highlights that “an important point” is that, “in addition to the IMI exemption, the proposal also includes the creation of a specific municipal regulation for firefighters in São Brás de Alportel”.

“This regulation aims to establish a set of additional support, which includes continuous training, access to equipment and resources, exemption from municipal fees, priority in the allocation of affordable housing, benefits for immediate family members and psychological and social support. This initiative reflects the City Council's commitment to valuing the work of firefighters and ensuring that they have the necessary support to carry out their duties effectively”, they continue.

According to the councillors, the vote on this proposal “will be a significant milestone in the recognition and support of the firefighters of São Brás de Alportel, with the potential creation of a wider set of benefits that will reinforce their important role in the community”.
