“Diabetes on the Move” program is back in Portimão

The program is a multi-institutional, multidisciplinary and multi-component intervention

The Municipality of Portimão resumes, on October 2nd, the activities of the “Diabetes in Motion” program, with physical exercise sessions taking place at the Portimão Gymnastics Pavilion and the Boavista Sports Pavilion.

The program is a community project aimed at people with type 2 diabetes and is implemented in Portugal under the coordination of the Directorate-General for Health, through the National Program for the Promotion of Physical Activity and the National Program for Diabetes, in partnership between the Portimão City Council and the Algarve Local Health Unit (ULS do Algarve).

«Diabetes in Motion» will thus start the next sports season on October 2nd and will continue until June 2025, with sessions taking place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Boavista Sports Pavilion, between 9:30 am and 11:00 am, and at the Portimão Sports Pavilion, between 14:30 pm and 16:00 pm, led by physical exercise professionals and nurses.

This is a multi-institutional, multidisciplinary and multi-component intervention program, and represents, according to the local authority, “a coordinated effort by the community to provide a concrete and effective physical activity solution for the segment of the population it is intended for”.

Participation is free, subject to referral by doctors and nurses from the municipality's Family Health Units. Interested parties should request information from their family doctor or nurse.

Diabetes, whose World Diabetes Day is celebrated on November 14th, is one of the main public health problems in Portugal, where there are around one million people with this chronic disease, with physical activity being one of the pillars of treatment, as it improves metabolic control, reduces cardiovascular risk and increases functionality and quality of life.

Additional information about the program can be requested from the Sports and Youth Division of Portimão City Council by calling 282 470 285 or by email: desporto.cm-portimao.pt.
