Teachers placed more than 70 kilometres from home in one of the 234 schools identified by the Government as needy will be able to receive the new travel support, between 150 and 450 euros. In the Alentejo, there are 37 schools on this list and in the Algarve 25.
According to the order published on Tuesday in the Official Gazette, the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MECI) identified 234 deprived schools, with students without classes in a subject for at least 60 consecutive days in the last academic year.
Teachers who are placed in one of these schools and more than 70 kilometers from their home will be able to receive the new travel support.
The subsidy will be paid over 11 months and ranges from 150 euros for teachers placed more than 70 kilometers away, 300 euros for those placed more than 200 kilometers away and 450 euros for those who are more than 300 kilometers away from home.
The majority of schools considered to be deprived are located in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, where 102 educational establishments were identified.
In the municipalities of Greater Lisbon alone, there are 69 schools particularly affected by the lack of teachers last school year, the majority in Lisbon (15), Sintra (12), Amadora (11) and Loures (10).
In Alentejo, another region considered to be most deprived, 37 schools were identified, in addition to 25 schools in the Algarve.
Between the North and Central regions, the ordinance also identifies another 70 educational establishments where, last year, there was a shortage of teachers.
The relocation support covers “all teachers placed in those schools, regardless of their employment status and recruitment group”, MECI said in a statement.
It is also in these 234 schools that directors can adopt some of the exceptional measures approved by the Government within the scope of the “+ Classes + Success” plan, such as hiring retired teachers.
In addition to the needy schools, the ordinance identifies 34 deficit recruitment groups, in which it was not possible to fill all vacancies in the initial hiring and in the recruitment reserves.
Of the total list of recruitment groups, only two are not included: Portuguese Sign Language and Agricultural Sciences.
