Alexandre Pereira, PAN Olhão MP, argued today that “in a municipality that extends over around 130 square kilometres”, the lack of a solution that allows the continuity” of the São Miguel Fair is “incomprehensible”.
«The Feira de São Miguel, as it is currently known, is a historic and centuries-old event. It was in 1753 that the permit was granted for the Feira Franca to be held on the 28th, 29th and 30th of September», reads the note from this party.
The deputy from Olhão states that “it is time to look at our municipality in a balanced and fair way, considering all its parishes. Viable alternatives, such as the Quelfes market and flea market or the Moncarapacho market, are areas that could perfectly host the São Miguel Fair, keeping the tradition alive and distributing the development of events throughout the territory. I even had the opportunity to discuss this issue with the president of the Union of Parishes of Moncarapacho and Fuseta, who expressed his agreement with this relocation”.
“Holding large-scale events, such as the São Miguel Fair or the Seafood Festival, on the riverfront or in the historic area of Olhão has created constant constraints, especially during the summer months, with the concentration of activities and visitors. Decentralizing and relocating important fairs and events would alleviate this pressure and at the same time enhance other areas of the municipality,” he continues.
The party proposed, in our candidacy for the Olhão City Council in 2021, the creation of a Fair and Exhibition Park, an infrastructure that they consider “essential” to ensure that events such as the São Miguel Fair or the Seafood Festival can be held in an appropriate and sustainable way, “without causing a negative impact on
more sensitive urban areas. This measure continues to be a priority, and we will do everything we can to make it happen.”
«Today, more than ever, it is possible to innovate, adapt and reinvent the Feira de São Miguel, while maintaining its essence and historical connection», he continues, adding that it is possible to open the doors to local artisans and producers, promoting living crafts and professions that are part of our cultural identity, «preserving traditions, but at the same time incorporating contemporary elements that enrich the experience for everyone».
