EB1 School in Cabanas de Tavira is Algarve champion in the collection of electronic waste and batteries

In the district of Faro 4 schools joined, thus raising awareness for the development of a recycling culture

Of the four Algarve schools participating in the Geração Depositrão campaign, EB1 in Cabanas de Tavira was the Algarve champion in the collection of electrical and electronic waste and batteries.

This school collected more than four tons of waste (4.815,1 kg), which gives an average of 150,47 kg per student.

Far from these numbers was the second place, Agrupamento de Escolas Drª. Laura Ayres (Quarteira), which collected 1.514,5 kg, that is, half a kilo per student.

Pinheiro and Rosa Secondary School (Faro), 408,5 kg of waste was collected (0,59 kg per student), while EB 2,3 in Quarteira collected 182,2 kg (0,27 kg).

In total, schools in the district of Faro collected more than 6 tons of electrical and electronic waste and batteries.

Geração Depositrão is a pioneering project promoted by ERP Portugal – Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Battery (RB) Management Entity in partnership with ABAAE – Blue Flag Association for the Environment and Education and which this year had the participation of more than 316.000 students who collected around 435 tons of waste.

In addition to awarding schools, ERP Portugal rewards students and teachers involved in the project, and awards prizes for each category of WEEE collected, namely those considered hazardous waste: TV and monitors, cooling equipment, and batteries.

For Rosa Monforte, general director of ERP Portugal, “the success of Geração Depositrão is reinforced every year, with more positive results and an increasing number of schools taking part. On the day of the green flags, we made an appeal for the donation of batteries and would like to thank the 24% increase in collections in this category”.

“Our goal is to contribute to environmental education and promote the circular economy, and for this reason, we would like to thank and congratulate everyone who joined us in this mission. At a time when schools are preparing for the start of the school year, this could be the reason for even greater participation this academic year,” he added.
