Parents expect to spend less than last year on the return to school

School supplies, clothing and footwear, and physical education supplies continue to lead purchasing intentions

Parents expect to spend, on average, 598 euros, a figure below last year's forecasts (minus 34 euros), on expenses associated with returning to school.

School supplies, clothing and footwear, and physical education supplies continue to be a priority when shopping.

When it comes to essential school supplies, parents expect to spend, on average, 183 euros.

On the other hand, it is on computers (590 euros), mobile phones (312 euros) and furniture (312 euros) that a larger share of the budget is expected to be spent.

The return to school is financially demanding for many families, especially in the current economic context of the country. Therefore, 95% of educators will take measures to make the start of the school year less expensive. Buying only the essentials (64%), looking for more promotions (60%) and reusing school supplies (55%) are the three actions that most respondents intend to take to save money.

With teaching increasingly digital, the purchase of technological equipment is also on the list of most guardians (69%), however this number is slightly lower than last year (73%).

Among the most sought-after technology items are: computer peripherals and accessories (45%); mobile phones and accessories (30%); desktop and laptop computers (37%).

Regarding the place of purchases, the data reveals that there is an increase in the intention to divide the purchase of school supplies between physical and online stores (44% vs 28% in 2023).

However, physical stores, despite having suffered a decline in intentions, still continue to be the preferred method (45% vs 56%).

In this context, guardians plan to purchase school supplies in bookstores (71%) and hypermarkets/supermarkets (66%).
