Tiago Cantigas and Fausto Coelho, from Casa do Povo de São Bartolomeu de Messines, are part of the preliminary squad for the Portuguese team for the Wheelchair Handball World Championship, in the ACR4 category.
Coach Danilo Ferreira announced this Sunday a call-up of 12 players, which, after a training camp in Rio Maior, will be reduced to 10 athletes before the departure for Cairo, Egypt, where the competition will take place from 16 to 21 September, revealed the Portuguese Handball Federation (FAP).
This is an event aimed at the ACR4 aspect, which consists of a game with four players against four, in which Portugal has never participated.
The consolidation process “is being constructed meticulously, so that Portugal can reach the levels presented” in the ACR6 aspect, highlights the federation.
"The goal of this final stage will be to work as hard as we can, to represent Portugal in this World Championship in 4x4 wheelchair handball, to dignify our name and continue to have our athletes at the top of the sport. It won't be easy, all countries have been working hard, and for some time now, with the aim of doing interesting things" in the competition, said Danilo Ferreira, quoted by FAP.
Portugal will compete in Group B, along with hosts Egypt, Chile and India, while Group A will feature Brazil – the ACR4 World Champion –, Japan, France and the United States of America.
The preparation stage has been taking place in Rio Maior since this Monday, September 9th, with the presence of right winger Tiago Cantigas and central player Fausto Coelho.
The Portuguese delegation, with just 10 players, will head to Cairo, the capital of Egypt, on September 15, two days before the opening game against India.
The last two matches of Group B are scheduled for September 18, against Egypt and Chile.
