Daniel Vieira gives concerts in Loulé and Alte to mark Heritage Days

Islamic Baths and Barreto Manor House and the exhibition “With feet on the land and hands in the sea: 6000 years of Quarteira's History” are other highlights

Daniel Vieira, an emblematic figure linked to the culture of Alte, will give two concerts entitled “Don't mess with the musicians”, at the Chapel of Our Lady of the Conception, in Loulé, on Saturday, 21st, at 16:00 pm, and at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, in Alte, on Sunday, 22nd, at 18:00 pm.

The concerts by the multifaceted artist are the highlight of the European Heritage Days programme in the municipality of Loulé, which include activities promoted by the Municipal Museum.

Accompanied on the viola da gamba by four musicians from different backgrounds and nationalities, he explores his “artistic freedoms” in the music of oral tradition.

These are songs that have matured over several decades, originating from a time when weeding and harvesting were a place of sharing, which are interpreted by Daniel Vieira using his memories and records from the time when he contributed to groups such as Almanaque, Dar de Vaia, Erva Doce, Grupo Folclórico de Alte and Os Velhos da Torre.

The two concerts are the result of an eleven-day residency that aimed to spark new musical dialogues that keep the flame of orality alive.

Also on Sunday, there are two guided tours. At 10:30 am, Rui Roberto e Almeida takes participants on a “journey” to the Islamic Baths and the Barreto Manor House, a space classified as a National Monument, under the motto “Crossroads of experiences in Medieval and Modern Loulé”.

In Quarteira, at 16 pm, at the old fish market, Ana Margarida Marques and Rita Vaza will guide us through the exhibition “With our feet on the ground and our hands in the sea: 00 years of Quarteira's History”, through the theme “Objects that Speak: the History of Quarteira”.

At the end there will be a musical moment of the three cultures (Christian, Sephardic and Arab) by the musician Eduardo Ramos.

The European Heritage Days 2024 will take place from 20 to 22 September, with the theme “Routes, networks and connections”, providing an opportunity to reflect on what unites us and what has allowed, over the centuries, the sharing of cultural and artistic practices.

These Conferences are an annual initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union that involves more than 50 countries, with the aim of raising awareness among the European people of the importance of safeguarding Heritage.
