Algarve cyclist Noah Campos was 47th in the men's under-23 cross-country race at the European Road Championships, held this Friday in Belgium.
The runner from Boliqueime, in the municipality of Loulé, finished the 162-kilometer race in 03h25m21s, 2m48s behind the 1st placed and new European under-23 champion, the Dutchman Huub Aritz.
The race was held at high speed, with the larger circuit, which included six cobbled sections and four climbs, leaving a group of 16 riders at the front, from which the winner would emerge.
With the advantage of the escapees increasing, there were some riders who tried to “bridge” to the front: the cyclist from the Algarve was in one of these movements, but ended up absorbed by the main group.
Gonçalo Tavares (37th) and Noah Campos finished in the peloton, while João Silva was unable to adapt to the pace of the race and ended up abandoning the race.
“This race does not have the profile that best suits Portuguese runners, but I would like to highlight Gonçalo and Noah, who achieved quality performances. Noah, in his first experience at this level, left excellent indications for the future and for this type of race”, stated the national coach, José Poeira.
Noah Campos, 20 years old, was crowned national under-23 champion last June and is the brother of Daniela Campos, who also came 15th in the under-23 women's cross-country race at the European Championships this Friday.
The Algarve's participation in the European Championship continues with the presence of Guilherme Mestre (Willebrord Wil Vooruit) in the 129,7 kilometre men's junior long-distance race, this Saturday, the 14th.
On Sunday, the 15th, the Algarve's Daniela Simão (Efapel Cycling Academy) and Maria Constança Marques and Raquel Dias, runners from Tavira/Extremosul/SC Farense, will compete in the women's junior long-distance race (72,9 kilometres).
