A gas balloon, which was participating in an international competition, landed on the morning of Tuesday, September 17, on an access road to Via do Infante (A22), in the Odiáxere area (Lagos).
The balloon had departed from Germany – more specifically from the city of Münster – and was participating in the 67th Gordon Bennett Aeronautical Cup.
GNR source told the Sul Informação that there were two men on board the balloon. Our newspaper knows that they were French citizens.
Despite the apparatus, there were no “injuries” to report, according to the same GNR source.
The incident forced traffic to come to a standstill.
The balloon that landed on the road belonged to Team France 1, piloted by Christophe Houver and Guillaume Joubert, who flew 2084.24 kilometers, from the start in the German city of Münster.
This was not the only balloon heading to the Algarve, with five more managing to land safely, both in Silves and at the Sagres Fortress and near Cabo de São Vicente, as revealed to Sul Informação source linked to the organization of the test.
The Gordon Bennett Aeronautical Cup for gas balloons has been held 66 times since 1906 and is considered the oldest and most prestigious competition in aviation. Balloon pilots from all over the world take part.
