Algarve natives Miguel Bravo and Miguel Monteiro, both from Roller Lagos, are on the list of 10 Portuguese athletes called up for the World Speed Skating Championships, which will take place between 13 and 20 September in Italy.

Portugal will be represented by a dozen skaters, three senior men (including long-distance runner Miguel Bravo), four junior men (including sprinter Miguel Monteiro) and three junior women.

In the preview of the event, the national speed skating coach, Paulo Batista, said that Miguel Bravo is a candidate for the “top-5” in his disciplines.

"He achieved two 4th places and one 5th place at the European Championships, coming very close to the medals. Now at the World Championships he will try once again to enter the top 5", he said, quoted by the Portuguese Skating Federation (FPP).

Miguel Bravo, also quoted by the FPP, highlighted: «It is the opportunity to show all my value and dedication on the biggest stage in the sport.»

The Portuguese junior men's team will have the second representative of Roller Lagos, Miguel Monteiro, 6th in the last European Championship.

“We have even higher expectations [in the men’s juniors], especially because we are taking the current 10km points world champion, Afonso Silva, to the competition. (…) Also in the men’s juniors, we will have two more outstanding skaters: Miguel Monteiro and first-year junior Martim Vieira. This team, which won the bronze medal in the relay event at the European Championships, will now also try to reach the final and fight for the top spots”, stressed Paulo Batista.

The World Speed Skating Championships will take place in the Italian cities of Montesilvano, Sulmona and Pescara, until September 20th, as part of the World Skate Games'2024.

This initiative includes other events, such as the Women's Roller Hockey World Championship, starting on September 16, with the presence of Sofia Moncóvio from Lagos, part of the Portuguese team.
