Widow donates bibliographic collection of artist Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos to Tavira

Bartolomeu dos Santos, who passed away in 2008, founded his engraving workshop in Tavira in 1995, having always remained closely connected to the city

The bibliographic collection of Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos was donated this week to the Municipality of Tavira by the widow of the deceased artist and one of the greatest European engravers, who had a workshop in this city.

The donation ceremony took place at the Álvaro de Campos Municipal Library, with the presence of Ana Paula Martins, president of the City Council, Maria Fernanda Oliveira Paixão dos Santos, the widow and donor, and also José Delgado Martins, the lawyer and founding partner of Bartolomeu dos Santos Workshop, in Tavira.

1648 documents on art, museology, literature and history, known as “Artistic Library of Bartolomeu dos Santos” are now officially in the custody of the municipality and contribute to the enrichment of the documentary fund of our Municipal Library.

Valued at around 40.600 euros, it is, for the City Council, «a privilege to receive this valuable estate».

Bartholomew Cid dos Santos

The Bartolomeu dos Santos engraving workshop reopened in 2012, in Tavira, on the initiative of the widow and some friends.

The workshop, located in a warehouse adapted from the old steps of Santa Ana, which descend from Alto de Santa Ana to the River Gilão, in Tavira, housed for thirteen years the work of Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos, plastic artist and one of the greatest European engravers.

With the artist's death, in 2008, the workshop closed its doors and remained that way for four years, with all its equipment and collection, acquired in the meantime by Casa das Artes de Tavira from its heirs.

The Recording Workshop in Tavira was founded in 1995 by Bartolomeu dos Santos, after his retirement from Slade School of Fine Art from London, where he taught for 30 years.

This Workshop, in addition to its own activity, with courses, editions and residencies, constituted a privileged meeting point for artists from the most diverse places, until its closure in 2008, with the death of the artist.
