Earthquake in Portugal has already had nine aftershocks and was the 10th largest since the XNUMXth century

All of small magnitude

The earthquake that occurred in monday dawn in Portugal it was the 10th largest since the XNUMXth century and has already had nine aftershocks, not felt and of small magnitude, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 5,3 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 05:11 on Monday at the mainland Seismic Network stations, with its epicenter around 60 kilometers west of Sines.

«In terms of magnitude, and considering an area with a radius of 100 kilometers around the epicenter, this is the 10th largest earthquake to occur since the 1858th century. XVI, this area being very marked by the occurrence, in 7.1, of a particularly important historical earthquake, known as the Setúbal earthquake and which had a magnitude of MXNUMX», it can be read.

The IPMA also highlighted that at the «accelerometric station closest to the epicenter of the earthquake on August 26th, the highest ground movement acceleration values ever recorded with modern instrumentation in mainland Portugal were measured».

Since 05:47 on Monday, nine aftershocks of small magnitude have been recorded, the most recent at 00:14 and 00:30 on Tuesday, the IPMA also indicated in a statement.

«Through the online macroseismic questionnaire, more than 19.000 testimonies referencing the effects of this earthquake have already been received at IPMA», he added.

The earthquake had a maximum intensity of IV/V on the Mercalli scale, classified as moderate to strong, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere IPMA).

With intensity V, considered strong, the effects can be felt outside the home, if it occurs at night it can wake people up, “the liquids fluctuate and some leak”, explains IPMA.

«Small objects in unstable equilibrium move or are knocked over. Doors swing, close or open. The blinds and paintings move. Clock pendulums stop or start or change their state of oscillation when they register an intensity of V.

The shock was felt in several areas of Portugal and with greater intensity in the regions of Setúbal and Lisbon.
