The 5,3 magnitude earthquake (Richter scale) that this morning, at 5:11 am, had its epicenter around 60 kilometers west of Sines and 25 kilometers deep, has already had six aftershocks recorded, but not felt, announced the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere.
The aftershocks, all of small magnitude, were recorded on the IPMA network at 5:47 am (1.2), 6:40 am (1.1), 7:14 am (0.9), 7:27 am (1.0), 11:44 am (1.6) and 11:56 am (1.5).
This earthquake, which did not cause damage, was felt with maximum intensity IV/V on the Modified Mercalli Scale (MM56) in the region of Setúbal, Lisbon, Beja, Faro, Santarém and Leiria, having been felt with less intensity in the rest of the continent.
After the first post-earthquake hours, more than 10000 testimonies referring to the effects of this earthquake had already been received at IPMA, through the online macroseismic questionnaire.
= IPMA explains that «locating the epicenter of an earthquake is a complex physical and mathematical process that depends on the data set, algorithms and seismic wave propagation models».
Different agencies may produce slightly different results. Likewise, preliminary determinations are usually corrected later, by integrating more information.
